Finally … Holgaroid success!

Back in September I got a beautiful Holgaroid from PolaPremium and I have finally been able to start using it. It took me this long to figure out what I was doing wrong. I won’t tell you what it was either because d’Oh! But no, it wasn’t leaving the lens cap on.

Yesterday was perfectly perfect so after spending the morning with a friend Harlow and I headed to the one dog friendly beach we knew of. She was in heaven. My only complaint is to the seagulls who ate my In & Out. (note: do not leave food unattended at any beach) I didn’t get three feet away from the table when I turned around and there were 50 + birds going at it. Twenty minutes later all there was left was the lid to my drink cup and a few ice cubes! Scary… I’ve seen the movie, The Birds.

On another note – I was showing this to a woman I work with and her response was “Oh yeah, I can do that in Photoshop.” This makes me sigh. I have nothing against Photoshop or any other photo editing software. Most of my digital pics are edited in Picnik. But I love film. I love the texture and the color of the actual film. I love the imperfections. And instead of editing an image on my computer I got to stand in the sunshine on a pretty beach smelling the sea air and peel apart my precious film like a present. And I got to be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I hope the sunshine went somewhere nice… it’s been raining buckets all day long today.

If you’re interested I took this using Polaroid 100 Chocolate film, developed for 70 seconds.

polaroids on New Year’s

I took the first two Polaroids in a little French restaurant in Los Angeles on New Year’s day. I admit I sometimes feel awkward pulling out my Polaroid and having people stop and look. But when they brought out the bread with a roll of butter and a little dish of pink salt there was no saying no.

The second one is the floor of the restaurant. I don’t know, I just thought it was so pretty. As I was focusing the waiter came by and asked “Is that a Polaroid?” – why yes, it is. He thought it was pretty cool.

So do I.

Do you take pictures of silly things too? I want to see!

imperfections

“When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something’s suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.”
Barbara Bloom

What a beautiful idea. I think that’s maybe why I love taking Polaroids so much. Sometimes the film gets stuck, or you get funny light spots, or the image doesn’t develop all the way… and that is what I love most. There are lots of happy little accidents. Thank you Polaroid for teaching me to love the imperfections.

Do you love imperfections too?

Mary Poppins, Farmer’s Market and Pinkberry

We saw Mary Poppins in LA and it was great. I have to admit it wasn’t my first choice of shows to see but the majority ruled but I take back everything. It was a really fun show!

We also wandered around the Grove and Farmer’s Market and of course got some Pinkberry. I highly recommend getting it with pomegranate seeds.

Now back to normal things like work, laundry and all that jazz.

(note:: I still haven’t gotten 100% used to my SX-70 camera and sometimes she tricks me but mostly I love her)

i heart utah

Aren’t Megan and Chelsea the cutest? Megan was nice enough to drag my sorry bum to and from the airport. And I got to meet Fabruzzio (aka Bruce) her cutest little pup ever. Harlow is very excited to meet him!

And don’t worry, it’s totally normal for Chelsea to hold a butter-y steak knife to my throat. I think my sides still hurt from laughing so hard.
I have a few more pics but not many. I get to busy being silly to remember to bust out the camera.

ps – I cannot wait to show you the most amazing necklaces that Chels is making. You will die.
