Harlow and horoscopes

On Friday Harlow and I will have been together for 4 weeks. We are very happy. It’s so nice coming home to someone who’s always happy to see you. I mean, my grandmother is always happy to see me too (I think) but she doesn’t come charging at me the second I walk in the door and jump up in my lap like Harlow does. Harlow. I love her name. I love her face. I love her cute little butt (except when that cute little butt forgets to tell me when it’s time to go outside). She’s almost completely house broken. She’s actually pretty good but I think there are just so many doors leading outside that it throws her off and so she just goes. But I always forgive her immediately. She’s also developed the habit of begging for ice. Well not really begging… she waits very patiently whenever you open the freezer for an ice cube to fall. And oddly enough, one almost always does. She wiggles with excitment from head to toe and then bounces on it. She’ll pick it up and carry it around an stand protectively over it if you get too close. You can almost see the disappointment and confusion in her face when it’s finally gone. She also loves apple slices. Don’t worry, I feed her regular puppy food and I don’t let her beg for table scraps. But a little treat now and then never hurts.

In other news I love reading my horoscope from the Santa Barbara Independent. Here’s mine for the week:

While driving in suburbia, I saw a sign in the yard of a home whose grounds were being renovated. It was an ad for the landscaping company that was doing the work. “Mesmerize visitors with your garden,” it read. Judging from your astrological omens, Taurus, I think you’re in an excellent position to do just that. It’s your turn to enthrall and enchant people with your metaphorical “garden,” whether that’s a mean you cook, an outing you plan, a set of songs you sing, a report you prepare or any other fine demonstration of your beauty and talents.”

I spent this last weekend with Alyssa in Santa Monica. It was such a fun weekend. Alyssa and I have known each other since first grade, so forever. I can’t say enough good things about her.

I don’t really feel like writing a travelogue so I’ll just post some of the highlights. In spite of my best intentions I did not take any pictures.

Eating sushi with Alyssa, Jesse and Sarah.

Walking/shopping on Robertson Blvd with Alyssa and Sarah.

Before we started down Robertson we stopped at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and I asked for a Lavender Mint Tea Latte (even though I knew they didn’t carry it any more) and the cute kid at the counter said he’d make it. A little Santa Monica miracle. It totally made my day.

Getting to see Pink perform for Howard Zinn’s documentary The People Speak. She performed Dear Mr. President and it was amazing. I’d never heard the song before (maybe I live under a rock???) but I was moved by her performance.

Lunch at Tito’s Tacos.

Attending a reception at Gallery 33 East with Sarah and Alyssa.

Alyssa’s cat Stussy, who did not make me sneeze once. I’m guessing she has magical powers. Another Santa Monica miracle.

Going to Swingers and eating some falafel. Yum. And the poor waiter who ran around trying to find me a matchbook.

Spending Sunday morning with Alyssa, getting some cute accessories at Skyla and stopping for gelato.

I may just need to move to Santa Monica.

Thanks Alyssa, Jesse and Sarah for such a fun weekend! ♥

A Love Story

As I’m sitting here there is a little black and white ball of fluff lying on her side across my foot totally zonked out. The little ball of fur is named Harlow and she’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. I’m not surprised she’s so tired… she spent the last hour barking at herself in my full length mirror, climbing up the spare mattress I had propped against the wall and then sliding back down, and rolling around on the floor trying to chew on her tail. She leads a hard life. I keep looking down at her but I can’t help it… She breathes so cute.

She’s such a fun puppy and so sweet. I love her already! She was so chill in the car all the way home from LA and has been so good since. Her favorite things are:

– My grandmother’s feet. She can’t get enough of them, especially when she’s wearing the fluffy socks she sleeps in.
– Ice. I dropped an ice cube on the floor the other day and she played with it, licked it, pounced on it and barked at it till it was gone. (is ice bad for puppies? I hope not!)
– Having her cute little belly rubbed.
– Chewing on my hand. At least her teeth aren’t very big yet.

She’s now lying against my let flat on her back with her cute little paws up in the air. Yep, I’m totally in love with her.

random is best

I’ve decided that my blogging strength lies in making lists. Lots and lots of lists. So here are some things that made me happy (and not so happy) over the last week.

+ Having lunch with Kate.
+ Lots and lots of sunshine.
Kim stealing a box of pens out of my desk.
+ Kim’s admission that she did, indeed, steal a whole box of pens out of my desk.(This included several minutes of denial, followed by a very loud and almost hysterical admission of guilt. Ha! This included her getting getting louder and louder, while laughing and throwing in a lot of “holla”‘s. Such is the joy of Kim. Some days it’s entertaining. Some days it’s not.)
+ Spending the better part of one day with my contacts in the wrong eyes. It’s an old perscription so it’s hard to tell sometimes.
Putting some kind of bug “bait” all around the house… not fun.
+ Having a bug free house.
+ Getting back in touch with old friends. (Thank you Facebook)
+ Being half way done with my book so I can start on the next one.

I am Elizabeth Bennet!

Take the Quiz here!

I had a feeling I would be either Lizzy or Elinor Dashwood. I am just not quite the romantic that Marianne Dashwood is and I hope I’m not as meddling as Emma Woodhouse or a prig like Fanny Price.

Do you think it’s possible to simultaneously have insomnia and narcolepsy? Because seriously I think that’s what is wrong with me.

Yesterday I got up, had a Mother’s Day breakfast with the fam, and came back home to get ready for church. Honestly I was so tired by the time I got home (at 9 am) I really could have gone back to sleep. I did a few jumping jacks (yes, I really did) and then got ready and headed off. I got home from church at about 1.30 pm and starting packing stuff up (to get ready for the puppy.. yay!) and at about 2pm I decided I’d take a little snooze. I woke up at 4.30 and did whatever till 10pm-ish. I was asleep in minutes. I was awake an hour later. Not just woke-up-cause-I-had-to-pee awake but wide awake, done-with-sleep awake. I was able to fall back asleep awhile later but I woke up another 4 or 5 times during the night. Wide, wide awake. The last time I was up was about 3.30 am and it seemed kind of pointless to try and fall asleep again when I had to be up in an hour but no one should have to be up at 3am. Ever.

And then this is me this morning. Beep beep beep goes my alarm. (actually it’s the radio and unfortunately it was Kelly Clarkson’s Miss Independent- not a pleasant noise when it’s blaring above your head at 4.45 am. But “beep” sounds more alarm-ish) Snooze. As I hit my snooze I am muttering “Hate early. Must kill early.” (Yes, even in a semi-conscious state you will find me quoting Gilmore Girls) Snuggle up tighter under my covers. 10 minutes later. beep beep beep. Snooze. Turn over. Snuggle tighter, head under the pillow. Beep, beep, beep. Fine!

So maybe I couldn’t sleep because of my mid-afternoon nap. Maybe. But I feel like I’m always so tired. Not tired, sleepy. But at night… forget about it.

No sleep does not a pleasant Monday make.
